I recently spoke to a very nice man who called and expressed a desire to complete his food storage. He wanted to do it immediately and for as little money as possible.could appreciate his passion.

When I questioned him further about his goals he insisted that he wanted to, “Just survive”.  Puzzled, I tried to clarify what he was actually saying, “Just survive”.  He explained that he didn’t want to have to worry about food storage. He wanted to have just what he needed to survive hidden away in his house in case of an emergency. He explained that he had some wheat, plenty of water and vitamins.  He wanted to be able to open a box twenty years from now and be able to, “Just survive”.

Throughout our conversation I learned that he was the father of two small children. I asked him what he understood about gluten intolerance and appetite fatigue. Both were topics unfamiliar to him. I asked him about his knowledge of diseases caused by poor or inadequate nutrition. We also discussed the affects of psychological stress caused by insufficient food, or the wrong kind of food.  I briefly explained to him what was in store for his two year old daughter if she were to follow his plan of, “just surviving”. From his reaction it was clear that, just surviving was not his real desire, especially not for his children.  No loving parent would knowingly place their child in harms way, or expect their child to suffer needlessly so that they (the parent) would not have to be inconvenienced.

What he was really saying was, I know I need to do this, I know that it is important, I know that time is of the essence, but I want it to be easy.

My dear sweet friends, in the beginning God did not create McDonalds!

We are so surrounded by conveniences that we have come to believe that anything that is not instantaneous is too much trouble.

You will never invest money or time in anything as important as the well being of your family. Consider your food supply your family’s nutritional security, and invest wisely.

“Every father and mother are the family’s store keepers. They should store whatever their family would like to have in case of an emergency…(and) God will sustain us through our trials.” President James E. Faust

Lately I have had the almost constant impressiont that not having a food supply in our homes is a violation of the most sacred trust. It is expected that we will nurture and protect our children.  We can not do that if we are unprepared.

We are blessed to live in a country where most of our children are not concerned with how they will get their next meal. They do not set the budget and decide where the money will go and what the priorities are, we do. Tell me honestly, when you run out to upgrade your cell phone to the latest release are you considering your children, or yourself?

When you are busy upgrading your cell phones--yet again, buying  gadgets, or shelling out endless dollars for hobbies without having your food supply in order you are out of focus and you need to refine your center of attention. It is past time to make an in home food supply your top priority, even if it means sacrificing in other areas that may seem important. Food is a need, it is the most essential need, place it above your wants and get the job done. That does not mean shoving a bunch of dehydrated "Food" under your bed, breathing a sigh of relief, and then going out for another game of golf or running off to a nail appointment. That means working, educating, learning, acquiring, using, rotating, and restocking! It means learning and living a new way of life. A more secure way of life.
