Consider Popcorn!

Hot buttered popcorn, caramel popcorn, popcorn balls, stringing popcorn for the Christmas tree. Can you say mood food? Who doesn’t love the smell of fresh popping corn? The aroma is one that we associate with warm memories, family, and friends. The smell, the sound, the feel, the crunch—who can resist?

Did you know that popcorn is not just for popping? Popcorn should be a staple grain in your food storage. Ground coarsely you will get the freshest corn meal you have ever had. Grind a little more finely and you can make a sweet corn meal mush, or an Italian polenta!  Corn flour is used to enhance breads and muffins in so many recipes!

Because the kernal of grain is closed it has a longer shelf life than yellow dent corn, and a significantly longer shelf life than corn meal. Under proper conditions popcorn will store for many years. My personal stash is eight years old and it still has a perfect pop!

For an extra special treat try popping your corn in an old fashioned campfire popper. The kids will love it.

To grind your popcorn, set your grain mill on it's coarsest setting. You will get lovely cornmeal!

Before you run out and buy a few bags of old grocery store shelf cornmeal, consider the benefits of storing popcorn.
