A good food storage inventory solves a multitude of problems. This file is provided for you and your family. You can print it as it is, or you can make changes to the file to fit your needs and download it to your own computer.
Record the items that you have as well as the items that you need in the column furthest left. Next to it you will record how much of each item you will need. There is also a column for each month of the year where you can keep track of what you have in stock and what you still need to purchase.
Print it out, fill it out, and hang it in a visible place. Use it monthly to maintain your inventory.
To get a basic idea of what your family will need, visit the Provident Living website maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You should use the food storage calculator provided as a starting point only.
It is important to note that the calculations found there are survival figures only. The numbers allow for one pound of food per person per day. Go to your pantry and look at a 16 oz can of food. Now divide it by three. That is what you will be feeding each family member at each meal if you store only what is recommended on this site. That is 5.3 oz. of food per person per meal. With the quantities given your family will be hungry, weak, and susceptible to disease very quickly.
It is a good idea to use the calculations found at Provident Living as a starting point only and then double or even triple the amounts as you increase your storage. You will also want to broaden the variety of foods stored. Include everything your family uses on a daily basis. No one will live on just wheat for long.
